NFL Tickets – The Powerful NFC East
The NFC East appears to be the strongest division in the National Football League. Each of the four teams could legitimately finish with a winning record this season, but that rarely happens, regardless of how good each team is. The NFL is unpredictable from season to season, as some previously good teams falter and some lesser teams elevate their level of play. Let’s take a look at each of the four teams in the division.
Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys were able to win the division last season and appear to be the favorite yet again in 2010. Both the Giants and Eagles landed some potential impact players in the draft, but the Cowboys might have pulled off the biggest steal of 2010 when they landed Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant. Bryant is hugely talented and figures to slide into a starting role opposite Miles Austin right away. He’s got the big play ability that sells NFL tickets, and Jerry Jones knows it. The Cowboys should have an explosive offense this season, and their defense should be adequate.
One Dallas player to keep an eye on this season is running back Felix Jones. The former Arkansas standout is a favorite of the Cowboys’ eccentric owner and could very well end up getting the lion’s share of the carries this season. He’s got incredible speed and has performed well when healthy thus far in his NFL career. Staying healthy has been a problem for the speedy back, though, so that will be a big factor in 2010. Marion Barber and Tashard Choice are sure to get carries as well, which only makes this offense even scarier for opposing defensive units.
New York Giants: The Giants were a big disappointment last season, as their two biggest strengths in previous years seemed to betray them: their running game and their defense. Coming into the 2009 season, the biggest concern for the G-Men was their passing game, which turned out to be the only reliable aspect of the team. Eli Manning did very well with young targets like Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham. The Giants will have to get their ground game back on track in 2010, which starts with Brandon Jacobs. One has to wonder how much punishment the big man can take, though, as his aggressive mentality and upright running style could end up shortening his career.
The Giants drafted defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul in the first round this offseason. He’s unproven and from a small school, but he’s got the potential to be a big-time pass-rusher in the pros. It might take a little while, but this pick could end up being a homerun. It could also end up being a whiff. I think Derrick Morgan probably would have been a better pick, but New York swung for the fences.
Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles might take a step back this season after trading Donovan McNabb, but I think it was the right move for the long-term vision of the franchise. The Eagles have an extremely young and talented offense in place now, and it’s good to get them on the field together right away. Kevin Kolb is unproven, but he’s looked good in limited playing time and has a lot of weapons to work with. DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are both good, young wideouts that complement each other very well, while tight end Brent Celek broke out in a big way last season. Add in running back LeSean McCoy and you’ve got a really nice core of offensive players that are all 25 years of age or younger. If they gel, this could be a playoff team in 2010.
Washington Redskins: The Redskins brought in two proven winners this offseason in head coach Mike Shanahan and quarterback Donovan McNabb. I’m still not sure they’ll be enough to turn around the Skins in one season, and I would not be surprised to see them in the basement of the division by the end of the year. I do think they’ll improve, but I’m not sure they’re better than 8-8.
