what will happen to me am i looking at jail time!?

So tonight I was pulled over speeding and a cop saw a close to empty bottle of captain morgan and asked to search my can I am under age and had nothing to drink. My coworkers friend hung out with me one night and wanted to smoke weed and he brought his own homemade pipe well he left it in my car and the cop found it and I was charged with possesion of drug parephnalia, I’m from iowa and I looked up the penalty, it was 50-500 dollar fine and up 30 days in jail. Will I end having to go to jail even tho it wasn’t mine there was no weed in the car either? I have a clean record just a few speeding tickets? Kinda worried ne advice would b greatly appreciated!

If he wrote you up for possession of drug paraphernalia, maybe. At the very least if you’re convicted of the charge you will have a criminal record even if you get probation or community service. That might be worse than a few days in jail. The record could prevent you from getting a job, going to certain schools, getting government assistance or a scholarship, and it will be on your record for life.

Get yourself a good lawyer before going to court, and know who you allow to get in your car in the future. There are a lot of people in prison whose defense was it wasn’t mine and I didn’t know it was in my car.
