Moving from one state to another with Section 8?

I am moving to New York to California. I have section 8 and the intention of keeping. Has anyone done? I understand that every state has different laws and rules, but I want to know, and an apartment waiting for me when I get there I can buy from apt here. My father left me and the kids stay with him, but I wonder if I can do that. Maybe they will give you the money until I get my own apt. I really need to know before being shot live on the block I do. I am disabled with two teenagers. I have one week following apt to go to accommodation, but I have to accelerate this process move, and I have the discharge to move and leave my current contract.
