Trafic Ticket Between States (Illinois and Virginia)?
Tonight, I embarked on my journey to work for a finance company in Charlottesville, VA. I previously had two tickets on my illinois drivers liscence within the last year, both for speeding, one which was in wisconsin. I was told by an autmated later that one more violation would result in a suspension of my liscence. In ohio, I got pulled over for going 65 in a 55 on a highway in ohio at 9 pm at night. I know states share data. Moving to Virginia, I need to drive to work. Am I Okay if I just get a virginia drivers liscence? Do I need a lawyer? Can they resolve this? Any help!!!!!!!!?????????
Also, I had had a bunch of tickets before but are off my record as far as i know.
You have a lot going on here in your question, so I will try my best to help you.
Illinois, Ohio and Virginia are compact states. So, yes, they will all find out about the ticket in Ohio.
If you choose to not pay your ticket in Ohio, then Ohio will send a letter to Illinois, which will suspend your license. Upon paying the fine in Ohio, getting proof from Ohio it’s paid, travel to Illinois (with the proof) and pay to reinstate your Illinois Drivers License.
Should you take care of the ticket in Ohio and get court supervision or probation, then don’t get any new moving violations in the time frame of your Ohio supervision. No letter will be sent and no suspension will be assessed to your license. If you don’t, you run the risk of suspension.
When you get a new Virginia license, you will be surrendering your Illinois license at the DMV. At the time you apply, which is required within a certain amount of time (10 days in Illinois), your license will be valid. I assume that Ohio did not take your license as bond and took money or issued you citation with ‘promise to comply’ somewhere on it. This means you should have received a pamphlet detailing to process to satisfy the ticket and apply for court supervision.
Since you had surrendered your Illinois license and if you don’t comply with the terms of the Ohio ticket, a letter will be sent to Illinois stating you didn’t comply (pay/show up at a court date). That letter will be forwarded to Virginia. Virginia will in turn suspend your license until the ticket is paid in Ohio.
Virginia is based on points like Illinois. Once a threshold of points is met, suspensions are initiated. At the present time, your license is valid. You should have no problems with applying for a Virginia license. Take care of your Ohio ticket quickly. You should be ok. All of it depends on when your previous tickets will not show up on your Illinois license. Meaning you can have 2 tickets on an Illinois license in one year. But if you were pulled over tonight and one or both the tickets will expire (more than 12 months old) before you get a Virginia license you should be fine.
