oregon speeding fines
Is it against the law to commit a hit and run of any animal in Oregon?

My cat was hit and the person ran. As speeding lady in a big white ford truck it my cat and then ran My neighbors who had to run her down to get her to come back and apolagize said she was speeding and then when she drove off she went way to fast. and the cop that came said it was against the law to hit and run of any animals and she would either get a fine or a court date. If any one knows, I live in Springfield, Or, Please post the website that says what is against the law and what the punishment is.

“Animals
If you hit and injure an animal, stop and make an effort to check the extent of injury. Give reasonable attention to the animal. What you can do may vary with traffic hazards at the time or the animal’s demeanor. If possible, you should try to get the animal out of the way of traffic. Immediately report the animal’s injuries to its owner. If you are unable to locate the owner, report the injuries to the nearest police agency.”

Basically if you hit an animal, you should pull over and check on it if you can do so without putting yourself in danger. I would assume the police officer knew what he was talking about when he said fine or court date.

In IL, where I live, we have leash laws for cats, so if someone hits your cat and its not on a leash, they aren’t legally responisble for it. I’m not sure about OR though.
