Friend caught with ecstasy.?

A friend of mine was stopped for speeding. The police noted that there were syringes in the care, which was for diabetes. Long story, found 50 ecstasy tablets in his car. He was handcuffed and taken to hospital due to low blood sugar. He has gone home to his people after that, I'm assuming only bail on charges they may face. What are the odds of him leaving the search inappropriate? If charged, what kind of time and / or fines that view? We live in Washington state and is not minor details are all I have in this time.
